A friend of mine got a quarter like that in his change from a vending machine. He went to flip the coin and when it hit the ground it popped open. It was empty. We figured it was used for microfilm or LSD or something odd like that.

I've got a bunch of coin shells and hollow coins that snap together in various ways. They're used in various magic tricks. Ones that are designed to be able to be examined after the trick lock closed and look ordinary but can pop apart if dropped. So someone probably went and spent a quarter that cost $50 in a magic shop.

I once saw one that was a half dollar inside a silver dollar, and inside the half, a quarter. Inside the quarter was a dime. I tried to buy it, but the guy wouldn't sell. The COOLEST thing I've ever seen along these lines was two octagonal $50 slugs milled out and assembled into a single piece with a watch inside. It was done so clean that when it was closed, you couldn't see the hinges, it just looked like a coin.

I have an old one - a wheat penny with a mercury dime inside.
